- The city is named after a 19th century Ukrainian poet. (Ukrainians have a long tradition of poetry.)
- The name of the city was changed to Ivano-Frankivsk in 1962 on the city's 300th birthday.
- Ivano-Frankivsk is located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. (These are the mountains that surround the region of Romania known as Transylvania.)
- The Carpathian Region is home to the Hutsuls, a distinct cultural group that speaks a unique dialect of Ukrainian.
- Western Ukraine is bordered by Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.
