Site Announcement!!!

We finally know where we'll be spending the next two years!!!  Kathrina and I will be moving to the city of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine.  I'll be teaching English to science students at the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, and Kathrina will be teaching English at the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University.

More details will follow in future posts, but here are some quick facts:

  • The city is named after a 19th century Ukrainian poet.  (Ukrainians have a long tradition of poetry.)
  • The name of the city was changed to Ivano-Frankivsk in 1962 on the city's 300th birthday.
  • Ivano-Frankivsk is located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains.  (These are the mountains that surround the region of Romania known as Transylvania.)
  • The Carpathian Region is home to the Hutsuls, a distinct cultural group that speaks a unique dialect of Ukrainian.
  • Western Ukraine is bordered by Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.
